Project Descrıptıon

The project involves the implementation of an integrated digital health platform at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda, one of the country’s leading tertiary referral hospitals. The platform integrates clinical, administrative, and operational hospital processes into a unified digital infrastructure. It enables the centralized management of patient registration, clinical documentation, laboratory services, radiology operations, pharmacy management, financial processes, and hospital administration.

The system supports more than 1,100 active users, including physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, radiology personnel, administrative teams, and hospital management. The implemented digital health platform improves care coordination, enhances patient safety through structured clinical documentation, and strengthens operational efficiency across hospital departments.

In addition, the platform integrates with national digital services and digital payment infrastructures, supporting patient-centered services such as online appointment scheduling, digital access to laboratory and radiology results, electronic prescriptions, and patient portal access. The system also incorporates insurance policy management and patient financial folio structures adapted to Rwanda’s healthcare financing and reimbursement environment.

Interoperabılıty and Natıonal Dıgıtal Health Ecosystem

The platform was designed to support interoperability with Rwanda’s national digital health ecosystem. The system integrates with:

• National Identification Agency of Rwanda (NIDA) for patient identity verification
• Digital payment infrastructures, including DPO and mobile payment systems

Standardized data structures and standards-based interoperability mechanisms enable secure health information exchange and support the future development of national health information exchange frameworks.

The system went live in April 2024 and is currently used across clinical and administrative departments of King Faisal Hospital. The system is actively used by 1,105 registered users, including physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, radiology staff, administrative staff, and hospital management.

Impact

The implementation has improved the efficiency of clinical workflows, strengthened patient safety through structured clinical documentation, and enabled better coordination of healthcare services across hospital departments. The digital platform also improves transparency in hospital administration and financial processes while enabling more accessible patient services through digital channels.

The implementation contributes to strengthening Rwanda’s health system by improving digital infrastructure, enabling integrated clinical workflows, and supporting data-driven healthcare management.
